National Unfriend Day

Don’t worry, it’s not as mean as it sounds…

November 17th is National Unfriend Day, but despite what you might think, it’s not going to rob you of all your friends. At least we hope not. The thought behind the day comes from Facebook, and how we should really be going through our “friend” list regularly and ridding ourselves of those pesky acquaintances who litter up our newsfeed with endless passive-aggressive memes, eternal game invitations (no, we don’t want to play Candy Crush!) and photo after photo of their baby/dog/budgie. If you usually feel a tad guilty at unfriending someone on Facebook, even if they have questionable political views, today is the day to do it, with no repercussions. After all, you’re just supporting a national holiday, aren’t you?

National Unfriend Day was founded by Jimmy Kimmel to combat the increasing number of competitive people on social media who collected “friends” like kids would collect trading cards. By ridding yourself of “friends” who are distant acquaintances and really not important in your everyday life, you can pay attention to those people who really matter. So you see, not so horrible after all. Let’s call it life decluttering.
