Phubbing

The most irritating habit on earth finally has a name…

Phubbing may be a new phrase, but people snubbing you to look at their phones is nothing new. And we’re over it. Maybe it’s just us, but it’s happening so much lately that were worried people are starting to think it’s ok. Well it’s not. We’re taking a stand against bad manners!

Picture the scene – you haven’t spoken to your friend in ages, you go out of your way to arrange a lunch with them, you’re really looking forward to a good natter but when you get there they have their phone seemingly surgically attached to their hand and they look like they would rather be crawling into the bloody phone to whoever they’re talking to, instead of interacting with the real life person sitting opposite who’s actually made the effort to spend time with them. Not that nice, is it? Are you guilty of this?

We’re not talking about taking an urgent phone call here, or even answering a pressing text message. A quick explanation and apology will usually suffice in that instance. We’re talking about the serial phubbers who can frankly go phub themselves. You may think it’s inconsequential and not that big of a deal, but we’re here to tell you to copp on. It’s rude, arrogant and beyond irritating. Whether you like it or not it implies to the other person that you think your time and presence is more important then theirs and lets face it, are you really that special? Probably not.

But don’t just listen to us – besides being rude and inconsiderate studies have shown that on top of damaging your relationships it can lead to depression and lower overall rates of satisfaction in life. Always looking to the next thing or thinking there’s someone or something better to be doing is not a healthy way to live your life. Slow down, take a second and try be present in every moment you’re actually living, not the backlit version staring at you from your hand. And get over yourself.
