Thanksgiving on its way?
Is it all a step too far? We’re all pretty familiar with the concept of Thanksgiving. If you’ve ever watched an American show you’ll get the importance of it – To Americans. From the Friends episode with the Geller cup to just about every other thing we’ve ever watched, we understand the concept that it’s kinda their Christmas. More US citizens celebrate it then any other holiday. But you know what it isn’t? Ours! It’s a national holiday celebrating pilgrims arriving on American soil (and subsequently taking it over, but that’s a whole other story for a different day).
Americans head home, have a giant turkey dinner and spend some quality time with friends and family. Sound familiar? That’s ‘cause it is, we do it at Christmas. Trying to force it on is a step too far in our opinion!
And what started as a reason to get together with loved ones has morphed into something entirely different. BLACK FRIDAY.
Black Friday is a truly US invention, when the day after Thanksgiving people swarm shops in a hysterical fashion from stupid o’clock to get discount on crap nobody needs. And while we don’t deny discounts are awesome, have they not kind of lost the meaning of the whole thing if the focus is put on material things anyway?
We’re not against getting together with loved ones, and we’re definitely not against getting money off stuff, but can we please split these two things up and not be forced into another holiday day no one has interest in? Rant over!
