‘I’d love my own fashion line’
Vogue Williams reveals her dream job and what it’s like going back to school…
She always looks effortlessly stylish so it comes as no surprise that Vogue Williams would love her own fashion line one day.
The Dublin native – who runs her own blog – told U magazine: “No plans yet but I’d love to definitely. Obviously I’m highly into clothes so I’d love to be able to design my own line. It’d be amazing. That’d be the dream.”
Vogue is a busy bee these days. Between travelling back and forth from Dublin to London for her gig on Spin FM, she’s also gone back to school for her new documentary Vogue Does Straight As and recently appeared on Bear Grylls’ Mission Survive.
She explained: “I’m back (in Dublin) all the time. I was over for my best friend’s hen and I’m over for work next week. I’m back all the time, at least once a month.”
And she’s recently bought a house here too. “It’s in the changing over phase at the moment so I’ll have it by the summer. The plan was never to move full time, I just wouldn’t be able to, it’s just for when I go back for work…we needed somewhere, we can’t stay in Brian’s mam’s house or my parents’ house anymore. We need our own space,” Vogue added.
Vogue Does Straight As hits our screens next month and the bubbly model said she loved filming it.
“That was actually a really interesting one to make and it’s just about people and how they do in their leaving cert, and we investigated loads more about it.
“I’ve met people and they’re just so unbelievably focused on doing their leaving cert, it’s the most important thing in their lives, and they basically give up two years becasue they just want good grades so much, I was never like that!
“Then there’s others going back to do their leaving cert 15 years after they’ve left school because they’re not in the careers they want.
“I did some of the leaving cert, the worst part was doing the Mensa test, I had to sit there for two and a half hours on the first day of filming. That was the most difficult part because it was so long.
“It all comes back to you a little bit. It was good sitting in the classes with all the people, they’re so smart,” she added.
But was it scary putting herself to the test in front of the nation? “That did sort of worry me because I was doing the Mensa test and that’s basically your IQ so if I had a lower IQ than I’m supposed to have… it’s on TV so there’s not much I can do about it now. It’s already filmed and ready to go so it’ll be out there for the world to see,” she laughed.
So if she was to do her leaving cert all over again, would she choose a different career? Vogue said: “No, I always wanted to do what I’m doing now. The only reason I was allowed do it was because the building industry collapsed when I left college and I’d done two building courses.
“Then my stepdad wasn’t pushing me to get a job or move to Qatar which is where all my college friends were doing, so I was allowed give what I wanted to do a real chance.
“So that’s how I fell into what I’m doing. But I still love the degree I ended up doing as well, so you never know if it all goes tits up I might be doing it again!” she laughed.
Vogue is judging Carton House’s Most Stylish Lady which takes places at the Irish Grand National, Fairyhouse on Easter Monday, 6 April.
She said: “I was asked to do this and I just thought it sounded like a really fun day out. I always love seeing what people wear to these events so it’s sort of a no-brainer for me.
“I love people watching and looking at people’s fashion, it’s the ideal situation for me!
“I think Irish people dress really well anyway so I think everyone is going to have made a huge effort. Everyone is going to look gorgeous but on the day something will stick out in my eye and that’s what I’ll be looking for,” she added.
But where did she get her own sense of style from? “My mum, she’s quite stylish. I borrow her clothes all the time, I’m annoyed at her she threw out all her old clothes. I do go through her wardrobe whenever I’m at home and always find something.
“Even now I’m like ‘where’s this outfit gone?’ because I see pictures in the house and she’s like ‘I threw it out’,” she laughed.
So what’s next? “I’m going to shoot a new [documentary] in June for RTÉ and that’s going to be totally different to anything else I’ve done. I’m a little bit scared to do it but it’s such an interesting topic I can’t wait to do it. I’m going to let the first one go out before I start talking about the next one.
“I’ve been doing a lot of TV for the last few years and it’s where I’ve always wanted to be so I just want to keep making TV shows and hopefully start making my own over here as well,” she added.
But does she ever worry about where the next job is coming from? “I think everybody has that that’s in our industry. Everytime I think that something new comes in and it’s just always the way it’s been. I’m lucky I’ve Spin which is a weekly job I have all the time so it’s nice I’ve some form of security that way. Something always comes in before I need to get worried,” Vogue said.
