Bernard Brogan teams up with Aware to launch the Petermarkathon

We were lucky enough to catch up with Dublin GAA player (and all round ride) Bernard Brogan in Peter Mark last week, where he was there to launch the Petermarkathon, to raise some much needed funds for Aware and it’s work supporting and educating teenagers on looking after their mental health.

One of the most in demand sports stars in the country, Bernard gets approached by loads of people for his support, but he told us why he chose to partner up with Aware, “I do a lot of work with Aware. I suppose playing the football and that you get asked to do a lot and I decided to pick one charity and add some real value so mental health has touched on my family over the years and it was one I was passionate about so I do as much as I can with Aware.”

As one of the best players in the country he knows a thing or two about the connection between being active and mental wellness, telling us “Mental health and sport has a very strong correlation. I feel that sports can add so much to peoples mind sets and well being so I try and bring that angle to it. I suppose that’s why I like Aware. Aware deals with depression and other mood disorders. It’s kind of the preventative method of it. There’s a lot of great charities that are for after suicide or trying to prevent suicide. It’s a very powerful message but what I’m trying to do is – I wanted to help at the early stages of it.”

It’s not all hard work though, after their recent All Ireland win he filled us in on the celebration, “At the moment we’re going around with the Sam Maguire around to all the schools. It’s been a mad few weeks of celebrations. It was cut short, we didn’t go as mad as we did in other years. I’m getting on a bit. And I’m running my own business as well, I’m responsible now, I can’t go disappearing for a week.” Hmm, somehow we find it hard to believe that he and the other members of the team were that well behaved after the win!

And while we were on the subject of the team and in Peter Mark, we had to get the lowdown on who’s the most vain player and he didn’t disappoint, telling us “Jesus we’re an awful bunch of vain lads now to be honest. I’d say it’s between Philly McMahon, Paul Flynn and Michael Darragh MacAualy. Michael Darragh MacAuley’s hair is just phenomenal – he just grooms himself every day. Paul Flynn is was always quite stylish and dresses well and Philly McMahon has his own fashion sense lets just say! He puts the effort in and always looks sharp.”

He had a few things to say about his brothers too “My brother Paul is basically like a female. Sunbeds and tight pants and tight suits and groomed hair – he’s the real metro. He’s as metro as it gets. Alan is just a normal Joe, he doesn’t put too much time into it. He’s an old fashioned guy.” And his own hair? “I try and stay safe most of the time. I had an overlap as a young lad as we all did through secondary school and it was awful ‘cause I actually have really curly hair so if I didn’t have it doused in wax it would just a ball.” We don’t see that many girls complaining now in fairness!

Pop into Peter Mark from 23rd-26th to check out all they have going on for the Petermarkathon.
