Easy, pretty effortless (once you get the hang of them) and they look great – plaits have really hit the hairstyle mainstream.
From tight, tidy pigtail braids to sexy, messy French plaits they can rescue a bad hair day in minutes. And as Alex Keville, Senior Stylist at Alan Keville for Hair explains, there are many ways to wear braids. Throw your hair up in a simple version for day and if you’ve got a big night out, they can add a cool twist to your look without looking like you’re trying too hard. Here are some of Alex’s recommended looks to ask for in a salon.
Celebs who rocked it: Olivia Munn, Hailey Baldwin, Bella Hadid
Why this look works: This is a cute look that can take you from day to night easily. You won’t have to worry about hair getting in your face. The look doesn’t suit everyone though as it can be severe, so you can pull some strands down if you want a softer look.
The classic French plait
Celebs who rocked it: Amanda Seigfried, Margot Robbie, Jessica Alba,
Why this look works: The French plait is timeless and if you wear it loosely, it looks good on most face shapes. Pin the tail part of it underneath your hair for a more formal look and if you want a more polished finish, spray with lots of shine spray for a sleek look.
The messy oversized braid
Celebs who rocked it: Selina Gomez, Janelle Monae, Jennifer Lawrence
Why this look works: This look is so MTV awards and all the hipsters will be rocking it. The great thing about this do is that it is loose and lifts the face. You can add a colourful ribbon going through it, or if you’re feeling brave, this look pops with pink or purple hair!
The halo braid
Celebs Who rocked it: Sienna Miller, Kate Bosworth, Scarlet Johannsen, Rita Ora
This look has got a modern update with so many celebs opting for it on the red carpet. In real life, the best way to wear it is with your favourite leather jacket and jeans to downplay the style or if you are getting married, this ‘do can really work well for many brides.
