♪ Thank U, Pete

Thank U, Next has become a pop phenomenon for many reasons. First, it's an absolute bop. Second, it's a song that's somehow given us all a new outlook on breakups. (Y'know how they're actually an empowering experience and not an excuse to cry and eat your weight in ice cream) And finally, the iconic music video that quite literally broke the entire internet

Well, it turns out the song we all know and loved didn't always sound like that. Appearing on the Zach Sang Show, Ariana revealed that she actually recorded three different versions of Thank U, Next.

In the original version (aka the one you've been listening to for the past 3 months), Ari calls out her exes but the second she did so, she panicked that it was too crazy.

"I'm super shy when it comes to pitching wild things. So I was like, 'Is it insane if I name people and thank them directly in the song?'"

Despite her team and BFF, Tayla Parx telling her idea was genius, Grande decided to make another version, just in case. The second version of the song is similar to the one we know now except she doesn't name her exes. Instead, the song opens with:

"They say I'm too young, had too many boyfriends"

Not quite as catchy is it, eh? Luckily Ariana agreed and knew almost immediately that this wasn't the version she wanted to release.

"And everyone kind of — including me — was kind of like, 'This is not the version.' Like me, as I was doing it, was like 'This is not the version.' But I was also trying to be protective."

Still not happy, Ariana recorded yet another version of the song in which she sings about marry Pete Davidson. Ari revealed that she wrote the song whilst she was engaged to Pete but it was at a time when their relationship was on the rocks.

"Things were so up and down and on and off, and so I didn't know what was gonna happen. We got back together, so I had to make a different version of it. And then we broke up again so we ended up going back."

So not only were we unaware that there are actually three separate versions of the anthem that is Thank U, Next but we also never knew that Pete and Ari actually split multiple times before officially calling it quits.
