Q. Every time I have a cold I break out in hives and swelling all over my body pretty much near the end of the cold. Why is this?

A: Sorry to hear that you are having such a tough time Karen. From the information you have given I am unable to come up with a specific likely diagnosis as there are several possibilities that come to mind.
It may be some interaction between your immune system and the viruses that cause colds which is giving rise to your symptoms. Such interactions can cause an inflammatory response which might cause you to have hives and swelling.
Such reactions are not unusual and are frequently a cause of worry, but (in the absence of any other clinical symptoms), is unlikely to be significant for most people. The best advice and what I recommend in your case is that you have a chat with your local GP who may run a few blood tests to see if these show anything unusual.
