T-Minus 2 Days...

If you've been reading U this week, then you're well aware of the fact that come Monday morning, the 91st Academy Awards will take place. And while usually, you would wait until the following evening to watch the highlights show, this year we're going to be all kinds of extra and not only pull an all-nighter to watch the event live but we're also throwing an Oscars themed party while we're at it.

And we recommend you do too.

It may seem too late to throw something together given the fact the actual Oscars takes months and months of planning but text that group chat because as long as you follow the advice from Oscar party veterans like ourselves, you'll be all set. (just like the well-curated dining-room table at the awards)

How To Watch:

First and foremost, deciding how you will watch this year's Oscars is the most important factor. Unable to watch, unable to party. To watch the Oscars live in Ireland you've actually got a couple of options.  First, if you have Sky Movies on your TV at home, there's a dedicated Oscars channel aptly named Sky Cinema Oscars. The channel's coverage of the awards will begin at 10 pm with red carpet arrivals. The ceremony will then air on the same channel at 1 am and finish at 4 am.  For those who don't have Sky, you can live stream the ceremony with a NOW TV Cinema pass (which you can sign up for here). Alternatively, you can hope the internet gods that be will find a link to stream the Oscars but our advice? Don't do it. Not only is it y'know illegal but it's also super unreliable.

The Décor:

So you've paid a trip to your local pound shop and unsurprisingly, they don't have Oscar-themed decorations. Bummer. The easiest way to give your sitting room that Hollywood feel is to focus on a monochromatic colour scheme with gold accents. Your pound shop may not have Oscar-shaped balloons but we bet they've got black and gold. And hey, if you're into DIY and feeling craftsy, grab some string, scissors, sellotape and gold card aka makeshift garlands.

What To Eat:

If you're looking for a good feeding, we recommend looking up the opening hours of your favourite takeaways. However, it's a long, long night and trust us, no matter how much pizza or Chinese you order, you're going to get hungry. That's why it's important to make some Oscar-themed canapes. Our favourite? Chocolate tuxedo covered strawberries. It may look like a set-up for a Pinterest fail but all you have to do is melt some white chocolate, coat the strawberries and leave to dry. Once set, met some milk chocolate and diagonally dip the strawberries leaving a white triangle. Now, this is when it gets tricky, using a toothpick, dip the stick into the milk chocolate and place 2/3 dots on the white chocolate triangle. Then, go for a second dip into the milk chocolate and make a bow-tie like shape. And voila! You've got tuxedo strawberries.

What To Drink:

Think back to those days of college when you'd stay awake all night because you left your assignment to the last minute. Only this time, booze is encouraged. Espresso martinis (and a nap on Sunday afternoon) is a key component to pulling an all-nighter. What you'll need is 25ml of coffee liqueur, 25ml of vodka, 25ml of coffee, 7ml of sugar syrup and a martini glass. Put all the ingredients into a cocktail shaker full of ice. Shake, shake, shake and ta-da, you've got the perfect espresso martini.

Now we know what you're thinking, surely watching the Oscars is the entertainment. But let's be real, we've all seen the meme of Chrissy Teigen falling asleep at last year's Oscars...not only is a long event but it's also got some mundane categories. That's why it's important to keep the mind active. Kick off the celebrations by getting your guests to fill out their very own Oscars ballot card. Follow in the footsteps of Alex Zane and make it competitive by tallying up who made the most accurate predictions.

Another fun way to keep you and your guests entertained is with a game of some good old fashioned bingo! With no official host and a series of Oscar snubs, there's no telling what is going to happen but what we do know? God, The Academy and Bradley Cooper will all be thanked in this year's acceptance speeches. Check out more of our predictions below.

And there you have it! All that's left is rooting out the fanciest pair of pyjamas you own and maybe giving your boss a heads up that you'll be a zombie on Monday...

Be sure to keep an eye on our Instagram account as we'll be giving you an exclusive inside to our very own Oscar party.
