It's often said it's better to get up at the same time every morning, all week long. We just couldn't give up on the weekend lie ins though (who wants to get up at 6.30am on a Saturday?) but this might change our minds.
According to a new study, those 'makeup' lie ins at the weekend could make your period pains worse. Which is just rubbish news really.
Japanese researchers surveyed the sleeping and period patterns of 150 female university students. The study looked at what's called social jet lag and relates to the amount of sleep you have on a work day vs a weekend or potential lie in day. A difference in the two can have an impact on your health. And, it seems, your periods.
The study found the students who suffered from social jet lag had more bloating and pain during their periods.
According to the New Scientist it all comes down to the circadian rhythms which are responsible for lots of what goes on in our bodies. When your circadians are out of whack, it can cause all sorts of issues, from insomnia to low moods. It also disrupts hormones which is what's behind this latest, terrible news.
Still, if you do have bad periods, and are fond of a lie in, it could be worth giving them up for a while to see if it helps. Meanwhile we're taking to our beds as we come to terms with this news.
