The 'C' word might still be unmentionable, but if one thing could make us excited about the holiday season, it's the big blockbusters that are released around that time. And this December will see battle royale between Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie, who play two monarchs in the 1500s in Mary Queen of Scots.
Today, Focus Features unleashed the movie’s first trailer and if you’re a fan of period costumes, death stares, and drama-building music, then this three-minute spectacle is definitely for you.
The film hails from acclaimed artist Josie Rourke, directing a script by former House of Cards showrunner Beau Willimon, and stars Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan as epic Mary Stuart, the Queen of France who, at the age of 18, defied pressure to remarry following her husband’s death and instead returned to her native Scotland to reclaim her throne.
But back in Britannia, she comes up against Elizabeth I, played by Margot Robbie, who rules over both England and Scotland, and the two fiercely independent women in a male-dominated world engage in a battle for the throne.
The casting choice is beyond perfect, with both Ronan and Robbie excelling in their roles as two resolute and warring queens. If the trailer is anything to go by, there appears to be plenty of battling, steamy romances, and the stoic drama you would expect from a period piece such as this.
The film also stars Jack Lowden, Joe Alwyn, Gemma Chan, Martin Compston, Ismael Cordova, Brendan Coyle, Ian Hart, Adrian Lester, James McArdle, David Tennant, and Guy Pearce.
Can't wait to see the kweens go at it on the big screen on December 7th.
