"It made me see how ugly people can get, and how cool people can be."
Following a tumultuous year featuring sever ups and downs, Ariana Grande almost singlehandedly brought back the importance of music videos in 2018 with the release of one of her most recent hits, Thank u, Next.
Grande made reference to heartbreak movies of yore with dedicated segments to four noughties films with would resonate with her young fans; 13 Going On 30, Mean Girls, Bring It On and Legally Blonde.
Also referenced in the piece were the names of the men she has been connected to romantically in recent years. One of those involved, Pete Davidson, made reference to the hugely popular track while performing a stand-up comedy set in Boston on Wednesday night.
"It was a sad day," said Davidson to start. "We didn’t know it was going to happen." But he did see the funny side, saying "It made me see how ugly people can get, and how cool people can be."
He noted that most break-up songs are generally pretty subtle about their subject matter, but of Grande's hit he said: ""Here's the thing about the breakup song. Usually breakup songs you know who it's about but you don't really know. Not this wonderful lady. This diabolical genius named all of us."
Grande and Davidson experience a huge surge of media attention during their whirlwind romance, which ended in October 2018, following just five months of dating. The two became engaged within that time.
