Ellie Goulding on what’s really  happening with McFly’s Dougie Poynter and dealing with her very public private life…

Ellie Goulding is in demand – but it doesn’t seem to faze her. The down-to-earth singer-songwriter enjoyed a hugely successful year last year after scoring her first UK number one single Burn and topping sales of over four million albums (for Lights/Bright Lights) and 15 million singles, and it seems things are only going to get better and bigger for the Hereford born singer. She’s currently burning (sorry) up Irish radio waves with her new hit single Goodness Gracious and her album Halcyon Days – which has sold 2,230,000 units globally – was No 1 in the Irish charts recently for the third time this year.   Last summer she took the Electric Picnic by storm performing to one of the biggest crowds of the weekend on the Main Stage and she is set to play a sold out O2 Dublin show on 1 March ahead of her big Irish summer show at Marlay Park with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis on 10 July. And she’s also performing at this year’s Brit Awards. Basically she’s busier than ever, but she’s loving it. Ellie told U magazine: “I mean it’s alright, I think my team are good at making everything seem quite chilled whereas actually on paper it’s hectic, but we’ve got it under control. It is busy, yeah.”   The 27-year-old released the official BBC Children In Need song, How Long Will I Love You last year, and quite simply, it’s so beautiful it gives us goosebumps. But where does she get her inspiration from? “Oh god, all kinds of stuff. I’m very observant, I think a lot, when people tell me stuff and when I talk to my friends, stuff like that, I’m always taking down mental notes about things. I think observant is a word that would be used to describe me. And obviously I read books and watch films. I wrote a lot in Dingle in southern Ireland so I guess where I am has a big involvement as well.” And she said parts of her life are mirrored in her songs. “Yeah, of course. It’s very hard for me to not want to write about my own situation. Sometimes I have friend in situations and even just stuff I pick up on around the world from what’s going on I like to write about, just certain things inspire me and certain things are more relevant than others in the world, and that’s what I write about,” she told U magazine.   Ellie is a superstar in our eyes but to herself she’s still just Ellie. She explained: “The thing is the people around me know I’m still the same person. I think the most important thing about me that I’m always aware of is that I got a really good sense of humour about stuff. So much weird stuff goes on in my life it would be very weird to the average person so I think it’s just good to laugh about everything. So I try and find everything funny,” she laughed. And it’s a good thing she can laugh at herself as every male that Ellie talks to she’s linked to, including One Direction’s Niall Horan and Ed Sheeran, but does she ever get sick of it? She laughed: “Again, I laugh about it. Most things aren’t true, or most things are taken from something and blown out of proportion. If I’m friends with someone or close to someone it immediately means we’re dating. But I indulge it, I indulge people who want to write stuff like that because I can see where they’re coming from, it’s an interesting story and people will want to read about it even if it’s not true. There’s only so far you can go with that too though!”   Ellie admitted she sometimes finds it hard dealing with her private life being so public. She told U mag: “Sometimes… I suppose you kind of ask for it. [Recently] I went to watch the basketball and I’m still a bit naive really because I turn up and don’t expect anyone to pay any attention to me or have my photo taken, then half an hour in you start realising people are taking photos of you. “That’s a little bit unnerving sometimes, but in general I think it’s really important to not think about that, because if I suddenly become afraid of going anywhere you’re not really living properly. I’m very conscious to not let that take over,” she added. The latest person Ellie has been linked to is McFly’s Dougie Poynter and they were singled out on the kisscam at a basketball match in London’s O2 Arena recently. Both looked amused by the suggestion they’re a couple and refused to kiss! Ellie later tweeted: “Apparently big faux pas to not kiss on kisscam @NBA sorry!! Ha next time!” She laughed: “Oh my god! Me and Dougie talked about it afterwards and we were like, ‘did they really expect us to just have a smooch in front of everyone?!’. Me and him have a similar sense of humour but if we’d really thought about it we’d have done something stupid or a naff dorky thing, but we were just put on the spot and we just freaked out! “They sort of choose people who look coupley so they choose a bunch of couples where everyone kisses and it’s a sort of tradition you have to kiss no matter what, but I couldn’t think of anything on the spot so I just freaked out!” she laughed, “I was expecting people to say we’re a couple but we’re not.” So that’s that all cleared up.   Ellie kicks off her arena tour soon and said she misses her home while travelling. “I just miss my little flat, I miss being at home and having my home comforts really and being around my friends. Touring is a really separate life, you sort of don’t count it because it’s on the road and it’s temporary but it’s nice to come back at the end of it.” But when she’s not touring Ellie spends lot of time with her friends, including Cara Delevingne and Rita Ora. She said: “I’ve got a lot of friends, some are in the spotlight and some aren’t, and obviously you never see the ones that aren’t because the press don’t find that interesting, so it seems I’m always out with [Cara and Rita] because whenever I am it gets picked up on. People think being in the spotlight we’re not normal people, but I’m sure talking to you now you can see I’m very normal.” Ellie is a star in her own right but said she’d love to duet with a certain someone. “Do you know I have to say, I know he hasn’t been given very good press recently but I know he’s a good person, James Arthur. I went to see him [recently] and his voice is out of this world incredible and I think once this has passed, this phase of negative press, I think he’s really going to take off. You can’t have a voice like that and it not go anywhere. He’s wonderful,” she told U mag. Ellie has achieved a lot for her young age, but that’s not stopping her having other ambitions. “I’d like to start making film soundtracks, doing the scores and working with composers… I think Lisa Gerrard is absolutely incredible. She’s contributed to a lot of film soundtracks and she’s amazing… I’d love to follow her in her footsteps if I can,” she added
