Every so often a publicity campaign for the ‘best job in the world’ pops ups. Marketing genius it may be but for the odd lucky person, it’s a dream come true (while the rest of us rage with jealousy).
In 2018, Ultimate Library, a company that creates customs libraries for fancy places teamed up with 5-star resort Soneva Fushi in the Maldives and came up with - truly - one of the best jobs ever. They opened the first ever pop up island bookshop in the Maldives - and they wanted people to work there. In a bookshop. On a beach. In a five star resort.

The three-month placement would involve moving to the Baa Atoll and working in the shop, surrounded by books on art, design, cooking and style. And sunshine and golden beaches and crystal waters...
Thousands applied to be the Barefoot Bookseller and only a lucky few were chosen. One was Aimée Johnston from County Antrim. Taking a brief hiatus from her role at Penguin Random House Ireland (and life requiring shoes), she's headed to the Maldives, taking over from the previous bookseller, Hugo, who’s been writing about and snapping his experience on Insta.
Unsurprisingly, Aimée is delighted with her new gig and said, "It’s one thing to wake up in paradise every day, but to get to work in one of the world’s most beautiful bookshop? That’s a dream come true.”
