Grease is the word.
When it comes to all things beauty, we’re particularly nosy and backstage during Fashion month is the best time to glean all sorts of informative gems, tips and tricks. Forever in our lookout quest for new product launches and how makeup maestros use said launches to kick start new season trends… and while the face-game has been really strong, we’ve noticed a real focus on hair thus far.
We loved Saoirse Ronan’s look at the recent BAFTAs and it’s not just anyone who can pull off a ponytail on the red carpet and still look majorly glam. Even so, we’re already planning our outfits for our payday drinks and we reckon we might try it out ourselves!
It’s amazing what we’ll do for our gruaig.
With all the parties ahead, these gorgey hair tutorials have come at the perfect time.
We’re hurtling towards the finish line… Will you win??
Check out how the U team got on... From brittle to broken, chemically treated and heat damaged, team U have got all the hair problems you could list (and even more besides!) so deep conditioning hair treatments were what we needed to try... AISLING KEENAN STAFF EDITOR Redken Three-Phase treatment, €55 David Marshall salon, Fade Street, Dublin My hair is in absolute rag order. I’ve been dyeing it blonde since I was 16, I’ve never gone a week without using my ghd, I have recently had hair extensions and while I took care of them I’d be lying if I said there was no damage. Actually it’s a wonder I have any hair left at all. I do my best with at home hair treatments, leave-in conditioners and heat protection spray, but sometimes you just need more. So I went to David Marshall’s salon to get their new three-phase chemical system. My hair was first washed, and then part one, a deep conditioner, was applied to my hair and massaged in to my scalp and through the lengths of my hair. After five or six minutes of sitting with that in, phase two – a spray – was applied over the conditioner to kick it up a notch. Then after another five minutes that was rinsed out and the third part – a protein that helps repair and rebuild broken hair – was applied and worked in, and left for a final five minutes. Overall the treatment took only about 20 minutes, but when my hair was being blow dried I could already see the benefits. My hair looked sleek, not frizzy at all, it was shinier than I’d seen it in a long time and it felt super soft. I washed it again the next night to see would the results stick around and they did. My hair was still healthier looking than I’d seen it in ages. To keep the results going, I’m gonna stick to at home conditioners and masks for a while and then head back in a few months for another go! FAYE McGILLICUDDY STAFF EDITOR Davines Hair Plumping treatment, €15 on top of a blow-dry (€32) Aviary Lane, South Anne Street, Dublin I have naturally VERY curly hair, so by its nature it’s really dry, then with all the extra work I have to put in daily to get it to be half normal, it’s usually in a permanent state of distress. I was heading to Aviary Lane, I’d heard loads of good things about the place but had never actually made it in. They do a brand called Davines that I’m obsessed with and can only get there, it’s all natural and organic, but there’s no faffing around and it delivers serious results so I was expecting good things. I was booked in with Matthew, who is fab, he works on photoshoots all the time so he knows how to give you amazing real hair, not hair that looks like you’ve just got it ‘done’. He started the treatment with a wash and condition with the hair plumping shampoo. After a towel dry the salon-strength treatment is put in, then you’re sat under a heat lamp for ten minutes to let it work its magic. After that it’s rinsed out and a leave-in version of the treatment is sprayed in. Now, full disclosure – I was a tiny bit hungover from a pretty full- on weekend and I don’t know if you’ve ever had someone wash your hair when you’re hungover but it’s basically like little fairies coming down and kissing your head, I was in heaven. Matthew then did his magic with the best blow-dry I’ve had in forever and off I went. Since then I’ve been using the shampoo and conditioner at home and I can’t remember my hair ever being in this good condition, so full marks from me for this one! DENISE CLARKE DEPUTY EDITOR Kerastase Discipline Protocol, €45 Hession Hairdressing, Drumcondra This treatment came around at a perfect time for me as I’d just been on holidays and my hair was dry from the sun and general day to day styling. The lovely Elaine was looking after me and she explained she’d be using the Bain Fluidealiste range from Kérastase Discipline. It’s a three phase treatment and takes just over an hour or so. First off my hair was washed twice with Bain Fluidealiste and rinsed thorougly, then towel dried. Then Elaine applied Soin No1 into sections of my hair and blow dried my hair before sealing it with a flat iron. Then it was back to the basin (I loved this part because I was put in a massage chair which was heaven because I’d had a tough TRX class the night before!) for a rinse and Soin No2 was applied and rinsed. Then my hair was towel dried again and it was back under the hair dryer for some final styling. Elaine sprayed some Spray Fluidissime into sections of my hair for added heat protection and then dried it with some body for me (I was earlier complaining my hair just ‘sits there’!). The result? My hair was super soft and looked really healthy (the professional blow-dry obviously helped). The treatment lasts up to 10 washes and decreases drying time and reduces frizz. NIAMH RYAN SALES MANAGER Joico K-Pak Four Step treatment, €24 Occasions Hairdressing, Maynooth, Co Kildare When I arrived to the salon, I was delighted to get free parking right outside – nothing worse than getting your hair done and running out while it lashing rain! Jenny my hair stylist was really nice and went through each step of the treatment in detail while I lay back in my nice massage chair, nice thing to do on a Friday after work! I got a better idea of what condition my hair was in and also what I can do to maintain healthy hair, especially while at home and as it’s coloured hair. It starts off with a deep cleanse shampoo, taking away any build up or chlorine that may be in your hair and this step preps your hair. She then uses a cuticle sealer, which seals your hair cuticles and prevents colour washing out, and restores your hair back to it’s natural pH5.5. The most important part of the treatment – the deep penetrating re-constructor – which smells amazing, is massaged and layered on while repairing all damage to your hair, it works even from the inside of your hair follicles. This seems to be the most effective and crucial part of the treatment, you can even feel it working as they place a nice hot towel over your hair. The last step is the Intense Hydrator which is like a moisturiser for your hair, and won product of the year... a must buy! It’s great to know that you can buy all the Joico products for home use, except the cuticle concealer. I was delighted as my wedding is in less than three months and my hair needed an intense condition, and I will be going back for a mini treatment before the wedding. MARGARET BOURKE ART DIRECTOR L’Oréal Professionel Mythic Oil treatment, €47 Sugar Cubed, Clarendon Street, Dublin After getting over the initial morto of showing up in a hair salon that was clearly targeting a clientele at least 10 years my junior and far hipper and cooler than I could ever be, I decided to sit back and just go with the flow. The lovely Amanda introduced herself and immediately made me feel at ease. She talked me through the treatment ahead. Her beautiful assistant Grazialla showed me to the the wash basins which are in a room on their own away from the bustle of the salon floor. It’s very tranquil and relaxed in there. As I lay back into my very space-age looking massage chair tiny little pulses began to work their magic down my back as Grazialla gave me a very relaxing head massage. The chilled out vibe was enhanced by colour therapy light panels built into the chair itself. I was first shampooed and conditioned. L’Oréal Professionel’s Mythic Oil was than applied as a deep conditioning balm and was left to penetrate as the chair continued to unknot my back. I didn’t want to leave. But I was soon taxied back to the styling chair for the finishing touches. Amanda was amazing. She talked me through each step explaining the products she was using. She applied L’Oreal’s Pli Thermo-Modelling spray that gives instant volume and then Play Ball anti-frizz fizz as a finishing spray which was light and dried in really quickly. I’m rarely truly happy when I get my hair styled. Like most control freaks I think I can do a better job myself. But not anymore. I completely defer to the genius of Amanda. The result was exactly what I asked for. Big, bold and voluminous! I left Sugar Cubed with a spring in my step, a smile on my face and thanks to Amanda, I Iike to think, looking a little closer to the age I should have been when I walked in.
